Why Christian International Students Are Poised to Lead International Movements
In a Wilberforce gathering with Indonesian Christian students who were eager to make a difference back home, one observer noted, “Not only are they Christian international students, but agents of change who can lead international movements in their home societies.”
International students have four powerful assets going for them: 1) Access and exposure to global realities; 2) Capacity to be cultural translators; 3) Skills for handling intellectual and cultural complexities; and 4) Ability to undertake cross-cultural advocacy. A fifth, and very important factor, is their appreciation for and exposure to multiple ways of fulfilling Christ’s commission to disciple the nations. It is not only essential that Christians work to bring international students to Christ. They must also help train them to apply their Christian faith to the great challenges facing their home societies. This is why Wilberforce International Institute exists.
The Institute’s board regularly considers new program proposals from both international mentees and supporters. This is done purposely with a view to identifying new strategic pathways for helping Christian international students utilize their unique assets for the Kingdom. The Institute is committed to being flexible and nimble so that we are continually adapting our methods to better foster creative change and human flourishing through our mentees.
